CelcomDigi x Selangor Red Giants Team Up To Develop World-Class Esports Athletes

PETALING JAYA, 4 September 2024 – CelcomDigi Berhad (“CelcomDigi”) and Selangor Red Giants (SRG), the esports arm of Selangor Football Club (SFC), are teaming up to advance the esports industry and empower gamers with the right resources and skills to excel in their personal and professional growth. As part of transitioning SRG and their Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB) esports world champions from Yoodo*, the partnership also expands efforts to inspire and recognise potential young talents in esports.

This initiative is part of CelcomDigi’s commitment in nurturing young Malaysians as Generasi 5G to use technology and connectivity with the right skills and responsible habits. In this exciting collaboration, two main initiatives will be rolled out next month:

  • A two-day bootcamp for 16-17-year-olds, who are passionate about MLBB to elevate their skills in the game, team dynamics and promoting a positive esports culture; and
  • A month-long Healthy Gaming Initiative for primary school students to expose them to responsible and health gaming habits at an early while sparking the interest in esports.

CelcomDigi’s Head of Brand and Marketing Services Chan May Ling said, “This partnership is to build continuity and stability as SRG transition from Yoodo. We’re committed to building a sustainable ecosystem where players can grow as world-class esports athletes that are both physically and mentally resilient.”

Selangor FC’s Chief Executive Officer Dr Johan Kamal Hamidon said, “The esports industry in Malaysia is a significant contributor to the country’s economy today. What started as just a hobby decades ago in the form of video games now has the potential to turn into a professional career. We believe that esports inspire and empower the next generation of gamers. With the support of a strong and committed partner such as CelcomDigi, our players can continue to thrive with increased visibility and reach amongst young Malaysians. At the same time, we are also changing the narrative around online gaming, showing parents and communities that esports offer real opportunities for career growth, cognitive development and useful soft skills while having fun gaming.”
